Assumption About Wine, Carbs And Collections; Wine Tasting And Regrets
Day 208 of The Andie Chronicles
Sophia passed the overflowing bread basket to GG.
“I think if we get a driver, we could probably cover about three or four wineries in one afternoon. What do you think”?
GG studied the bread, looking as if she wanted to take a piece before pushing it away.
“I think we could do that. Taylor got someone we could use. And I am sure he wouldn’t mind on such short notice.”
Sophia nodded, approving of GG’s suggestion, grinning with glee. “Do you think I should invite Malcolm? Yes, yes, I probably should. He would like the wine.”
She tore another piece of bread into pieces, fitting as much as possible into her mouth. Lucky Malcolm, I mused.
James picked up his phone and started flicking through his calendar. “Yes, I’m free on Sunday. What about you, Andie?”
I picked up my phone and copied James. I knew I had nothing on except the tentative time to spend with Cooper. But I also planned to spend most of my weekends like this, working on Highway. For the seeable future.
“Yes, I’m free.”
I held my breath and examined the expressions of my friends. I knew what they wanted me to say next. Or what they were hoping for me to say—something about asking their permission to include Cooper.
Sophia studied me. “So, it’s you? Just you on your own? No other half?”
“No, I don’t think so. It’ll be me on my own. Is that okay?”
“Yes, that’s what I was thinking. I don’t think the wineries are Coopers thing.”
How on earth Sophia came up with that assessment baffled me. She knew nothing of Cooper.
And I wasn’t going to tell them about his near-hundred-bottle cellar in the middle of Cooper's home. Not to mention the additional space underneath the house, converted into a second cellar.
I didn’t want to say he was a collector and adored wine. And despite his physical occupation, he enjoyed a drink more than any other Aussie.
But I thought it would sound like I was boasting. Like I was trying to push my boyfriend onto my friends. I didn’t want to do that. On behalf of my friends, Sophia had made it clear how little they approved of Cooper Crusher.
“He has training on Sunday. There is a big show coming up next weekend, I think. No doubt he will be in the gym all day. I will get out of his hair. I don’t want to bug him all the time.”
I looked across at James, who seemed delighted by my decision. Probably because he thought I was exercising some caution. The reality was different; I was exercising caution for Cooper and keeping him away from their pitiful assessments of him.
I shouldn’t have done it, though. I should’ve told my friends the truth. Right now, it all seemed too hard.
The lunch passed by slowly. And the more they talked about this winery tour, the more I wished I hadn’t accepted.
