At Some Point, The Boss Wants To Know Why You Ran Away. He Can Wait.
Day 170 of The Andie Chronicles
James insisted we go to work together today. He wanted to absorb every detail of my affair, as he called it.
I couldn't believe I told him about Cooper. I blurted the news in the most undignified way. And I found myself telling him about our fantastic sex.
He must have missed me because James insisted on ditching the town car and catching the train into the city. We walked past the luxury shops, hand in hand, like in the old days, gossiping and whispering to each other, before arriving at 101 Collins St.
James straightened himself at the sight of the building, almost assuming the role of Douglas' personal ass-kisser.
With the gesture, I was reminded how this friend had backstabbed me for months. I didn't enjoy the memory.
James stopped as we were about to make our way through the revolving doors, turning to me and holding me firmly by the shoulders. "You know Douglas is angry, right?"
I nodded. Of course, he would be angry. He was angry at me for being a few minutes late; he would be raging over this.
"Ok, good. Because he will chew you out the minute you get up there." James hesitated. "He chewed me out when you left, angry I wouldn't get on a plane and go find you and bring you back."
I screwed up my face. "Gees, dramatic much?"
"Yeah, that's what I said, and he didn't take that well, either. Was he like this when you were dating?"
"You mean irrational? Only towards the end, when he wasn't getting his way."
I felt for James, but this is what he signed up for. He knew Douglas treated me like shit at the end; how did he think it would never happen to him in a high-stakes environment?
Arriving at our floor, I waltzed straight into Douglas' office. Rip the band-aid off, I thought, get the madness over and done with.
My ex was waiting by the window as if he had seen me coming. "So you've finally decided to show up to work, huh?"
"I took leave. Do you need me to explain what that is to you?"
Douglas didn't laugh, instead not moving, the stern expression engulfing his face. This attractive man, the one I could have ravished almost every day of my life, didn't look good like this. He looked sour, miserable, and unappealing.
"You're being petulant. You need to learn something very clearly, Andie. When you work for me, you do what I say. Is that concept too difficult for you to grasp?"
"I love how you think stealing my business means I'm going to end up loyal to you, behaving as you want me to. Perhaps you're the one struggling with easy concepts to grasp."
