Best Friend Thinks Ex-Boyfriends Are The Keys To Becoming Millionaires
Day 125 of The Andie Chronicles
“I want this to be an evening we all remember.”
James stood on the table, something we would all usually feel embarrassed about. Yet, this private room didn’t have an audience. We could do what we wanted.
And if we needed to, we could pull back the thick khaki velvet drapes lining the floor-to-ceiling walls and hide away from prying eyes.
Booking a private room at Society, the glittering restaurant in the most upscale part of town, was too much. The dining table seated sixteen people, and it was just the four of us. The original four. It was nice.
“And thank you to the gorgeous Julia for making this happen. Sweetie!”
James pointed at the woman in the corner, dressed in a demure Chanel-style suit. She was Douglas’ contact at Society, who magically made a table available every time his need arose.
“Now,” he said, shifting himself toward me, “Let’s raise our glasses and drink to our success.”
I quickly clutched the champagne stem and raised it, letting out a brief cheer.
I took a sip and savoured the liquid. Far better than the swill I had at home, an upside to this charade. James finished his drink, taking the entire glass in one mouthful before insisting on topping everyone else up.
“Andie, can I pass you the tartar?”
I already had some on my plate, but I could feel GG’s insistence I take the dish from her. She wouldn’t put it down until I took it from her and put more on my plate. GG kept smiling at me all night, grinning as I held my glass, grinning as embraced James.
“It’s just so wonderful to see you smile, Andie.”
“Fuck yeah, it is,” chimed in James.
Sophia didn’t know which way to look. “I love the sentiment, but do you think we could keep it down? God forbid someone hears us swearing like cowboys.”
James scoffed. “We don’t even have fucking cowboys in this country.” Sophia sat back in her chair and sipped her champagne.
The bottle was near empty. I looked at it and signalled for our waitress to bring another.
“On me,” I shouted.
My friends cheered like they had won the lottery.
James leaned into me, holding my neck like we were lovers.
“Babe, I’m so happy with what you did yesterday. Douglas needed to hear you understood the changes and you were with them, you know? He just wants the best for us.”
I couldn’t ignore the pang of hurt.
Douglas didn’t want what was best for us. He wouldn’t have broken up with me the way he did if he cared about me. He would have left me alone if he cared about me. He would have moved on and stayed away from my friends.
James had fallen for the Douglas charm. James was under his spell.
“Well, I’m glad. I just can’t wait to see what Douglas does to make us millionaires like him.”
James’ shoulders rose to his ears and then quickly back down again.
“Yes, well, it’s going to be great.”
