The white car seemed too much.
The party was white, our outfits were white, James had stolen my white eyeliner and decorated himself in white, did we really need the white car too?
Sophia cooed at the vehicle, having never been in something like it. Her parents didn't even let her go to our school formal in year eleven for fear her private school chums would convert her into a life of debauchery.
GG thought it was tacky, reminding her too much of her wedding. And James thought it needed a pop of colour, like the entire event itself.
There was no choice about the white. Annabella insisted Douglas' team embraced the white theme more than anyone else. To set the tone, as the email said.
Douglas forwarded Annabella's instructions with his personal demand; don't disappoint me. Everyone must be there and all in white.
The white limousine pulled up at Crown, and we ascended the stairs to the Palladium. It was decorated all in white, the vast space looking almost angelic, with faux clouds of white feathers and a smoke machine puffing white dust every ten minutes.
I followed James to the bar where they only served white drinks, foul-smelling milk-like cocktails made with natural milk or coconut.
"What exactly is this event for?" I inquired, leaning into James, who was sniffing a cocktail before putting it back on the bar. I only read the email in part. There's nothing like reading an email from your ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend.
"It's for a make-up range that Annabella is the face of. Or she's launching."
James didn't seem so sure, unusual for him, considering the ass-kisser needed to know everything.
"And is it all white make-up?"
"I think the packaging is white. To represent the virginity Annabella pretends to have still."
I knew Annabella from school and could confirm any innocence was well and truly left in her teens. I wasn't one to judge; I did the same thing. The only difference is I was pretending to be something I wasn't.
"Surely there are goodie bags somewhere around here."
The ballroom was disgustingly ornate, and hundreds of people intermingled between decorations and waiters walking around with white food. The music was loud, all pop and hardly any soul.
As James and I weaved through the blondes in skin-tight dresses and the sea of hair extensions and fake nails, I thought about Cooper.
He would wear white and schmooze with the best, but he would be like me, wondering where the colour was. Wondering where the truth is. And if he were here, I would take him to a quiet corner of the ballroom and imagine there was no one else but him and I.
I wanted to hear his voice, I wanted to feel his skin on mine, I wanted to feel his strength wrapped around my body.
And I wanted us to be in the dark, dirty and real wrestling arena with the misfits like me.
Part of me wanted to call him immediately and tell him I was missing him. The other part of me didn't want to frighten this man, send him running. I didn't want to stuff up another relationship.
I needed a (non-white) drink.
