Don't Underestimate The Man In The Wrestling Trunks Amongst The Suits
Day 201 of The Andie Chronicles
As part of the mandatory race excursion sure to engulf most of our sacred weekend, Douglas insisted that we go to the racing preview night. At the racecourse. For most of Friday evening.
It was the soirée in which the who's-who of Melbourne was seen socialising and mingling with the right people.
I don't think anyone in this room really liked racing. Could anyone name the favourites going into the carnival?
Could anyone even tell you the names of any current horses, trainers, or jockeys?
Or whether Flemington was MRC or VRC or some other membership club?
No, it seemed it was all about socialising.
I love a good flutter. My grandfather taught me how to spot a fast horse when I was young. But I wasn't telling anyone else that.
Private school kids didn't value your ability to enjoy punting or be any good at it. Then again, they weren't so approving of dating a wrestler, either.
My invitation said I could bring anyone I liked, so, of course, I took Cooper. This wasn't some sit-down dinner like it was the other night or like GG's birthday was. This was somewhere where we could mingle or be alone.
And that's exactly what I wanted to do with him. It didn't hurt that this event provided the perfect opportunity to see him dressed in a full suit that could hardly contain his muscles.
There wasn't anything Cooper wore I didn't want to rip off his body.
When James laid eyes on Cooper, he was quick to dress me down. "I can't believe you brought him. What is Douglas gonna say when he sees him?"
"James, I love how you think I care about what Douglas thinks. And he is over there schmoozing with Annabella and all her little influencer friends. He isn't gonna even know the Cooper is here."
As James pulled me aside to continue admonishing my behaviour, we both noticed a collection of blonde, petite and identical-looking women flooding Cooper. They all wanted his picture, scrounging to get in a photo with him first.
Many of them requested selfies before handing their phone off to another unsuspecting female for her to take a photo with him.
I had to laugh. I knew Cooper was somebody. I knew people knew who he was, and as much as my friends wanted to pretend he was below them, these situations continued to prove otherwise.
"You can't really have a go at Annabella and the influences when Cooper standing over there doing exactly the same thing."
I stared at James. He looked like this bitter and twisted child when someone stole something he wanted.
"James, this jealousy does not look good on you. Don't get all your knickers in a knot because someone is getting something you want."
And before James could reply, I sauntered away and joined Cooper in taking photos with the girls.
Before I could persuade these women to wait patiently, Annabella suddenly appeared, demanding Cooper's attention. As she went to hand me her phone, I pushed it away. "Cooper is done with pictures for tonight," I declared. "Maybe tomorrow."
I had no intention of bringing Cooper to the races tomorrow, but I knew it would get back to Douglas.
A little fun to be had in this situation.
If I had to go to one of his soirees and wear the clothes he demanded of me, I wasn't going to make it easy.
