Expectations To Meet The New Man When Your Ex Is Still Around? Tough Times At 1LD
Day 187 of The Andie Chronicles
"Knock, knock," chimed Sophia as she knocked on my front door and let herself into my home, 1 Lovelock Drive. "Are you decent?"
I was sitting at my dining room table with a reheated piece of lasagna, sitting opposite James pouring us both a glass of red Cooper gave me from his cellar.
"We're just having our dinner. You want some?" Sophia took a seat at the table and examined the wine. "This is lovely. Expensive. A bit much for a Friday night."
"I think it's just perfect," noted James, who took a sip from his glass. "Andie's new man is quite generous."
"That's why I'm here, actually. I was hoping to meet him." I put my knife and fork on my plate and swallowed, ensuring I could give all my concentration to her absurd request.
"You came over here in the hope he would be here?"
"Yep. I thought it would be better than making a big fuss, you know?"
"I see what you mean."
I had to think seriously about what to say next. I felt this surge of anger running through me, clouding any rational judgment. I thought about all the times my friends had been absent in my break up, taking sides with my ex in my break up, going behind my back.
Though I was letting that go, moving past, trying to save us from the inevitable takeover by Douglas, I wasn't sure about merging my very new and unique relationship with Cooper with my turbulent friendships.
I looked across at Sophia, who was waiting for me to speak, drumming her fingers on the dining room table like it was hers. It might be too soon for him to meet everyone.
"Too soon for him? He doesn't want to meet us?"
I could feel Sophia's hurt. "No, it has nothing to do with what he wants. It's about me; I think it's too soon. I don't think I'm ready to share my relationship."
"Are you worried we're going to do something wrong?"
"No, of course not. Don't be like that. You know what I've been through with Douglas, and now I can't get rid of the asshole to save me. You guys were closer to him at one point than you were to me. I need some distance; I need to feel good for a moment, you know?"
"I guess I understand." Sophia was lying to me; her tucked lower lip and petulant tone weren't selling me. "Well, I support you, Andie, whatever you want to do."
After Sophia left and the wine was finished, I thought about Cooper meeting my friends. I knew I couldn't hide him forever. And the last thing I wanted was some chance meeting, as Sophia had intended when she made herself at home in mine.
"James," I hesitated, "Would you like to have lunch here tomorrow and meet Cooper?"
"I would love that."
