Flaunt Your Money Or Don't; Don't Underestimate The Wrestling Credit Card
Day 210 of The Andie Chronicles
Last up on the winery tour was this gorgeous little place in the back streets behind Coldstream. It was one that I knew the name of; Cooper had a stack of their bottles in his cellar.
As we approached, I gave him a quick call, hiding my phone with my hand. This wasn’t a conversation for the court of public opinion. They had enough views to last them a lifetime—no need to provide them with more.
“Hey babe, I was wondering if you want me to get any wine whilst I’m here.”
“Oh yes. If they have the new vintage of Pinot Noir, can you please pick up three dozen? And if there’s anything else you like, feel free to add it to the order.”
Cooper was so casual about his request. Spend thousands of dollars; don’t worry about it.
Unlike the other people in my life, he wasn’t someone who seemed to flaunt his money.
Douglas would make a big deal about affording this kind of wine, ensuring everyone in earshot knew how much he was paying what he could afford. What power he could wield.
Cooper was the opposite, avoiding making a spectacle, a scene over money and wealth. Sometimes, I wondered if Cooper’s opposing values to Douglas made him more appealing to me.
Yet, the more I realised how similar Cooper was to me, the way we shared the same outlook on life, it confirmed how wrong Mr. Gallo was for me.
Wrong? A disaster. A complete misjudgement. A blip on my dating resume I erased in my mind. When they tell you opposites attract, please don’t believe them. Opposites only cause you to hate them eventually.
Sophia paraded into the cellar door and immediately seized the wineries’ tasting menu.
“Should we do a tasting? Who’s in for the full board?”
GG enjoyed the suggestion. “Perhaps we should get a cheese platter while here, too. Then we can lounge for a little bit.”
I couldn’t deny the beautiful views, the smokiness of the fireplace in the middle of the cellar door, and all the lovely wine surrounded by my friends.
But it didn’t escape me how I felt like I couldn’t have my man here. He would’ve loved it the most.
And it would have kept Taylor away from my waist side. For most of the journey, Taylor sat near me. And as we took our places at the cellar door’s tasting table, it was no different.
With each sip, he insisted on my views, whether I liked the things we tried, and what tasting notes I concluded. After the third wine, I gently reminded him that he should probably be asking GG this, not me.
“I am asking her what she likes,” he retorted.
“Then why are you defending yourself so hard right now?”
Taylor didn’t know which way to look. “I’m just trying to be nice, Andie.”
“I know you are, but I think you’re trying a bit too hard to be nice to me.”
This whole situation between Taylor and me was a mystery to me. I couldn’t define it, yet I knew it was getting out of hand.
I was in love with Cooper, and GG was in love with Taylor, and that meant what we had couldn’t continue. And as I knew what he was feeling about me, I couldn’t let him follow me in situations like this.
After trying all the wine, Sophia approached the winemaker and ordered two bottles. “Does anyone else want anything?”
I turned to the winemaker and politely requested Cooper's order and two cases of the reserve wine mentioned at some point between wine number four and five.
“That’s five cases in total, is that right?” confirmed the dutiful host, taking us through the tasting.
“Yes, thank you. And if someone could help me take it to the van, that would be great. I’m just not that strong.
“Of course, our pleasure,” replied the man, who seemed grateful I was buying so much.
I turned around from the bar to see every one of my friends staring at me. James’s mouth was near the floor, and GG was analysing my purchase.
“What? What have I done?”
“How much did you spend?” enquired James.
“A few thousand. Why?”
“Excuse me for being blunt, Andie, but I don’t think you can afford that,” assessed GG.
“I know I can’t afford it, but Cooper can. This is his order. He loves this winery.”
