The walk between the office to Cecconi's on Flinders Lane felt like a lifetime when you're friends are about to meet your new man for the first time.
They're bustling along, excited, pondering the person they're about to meet.
And as for me; I'm stalling, questioning my life choices, wondering why I ever agreed to this. If this doesn't go well, if they don't love Cooper like I do, where do I go from here?
I was grateful for James, who wasn't divulging the calamity that was their first meeting. I was wondering if he had told anyone about how he clashed with Cooper over wrestling's legitimacy. But GG and Sophia seemed excited, undeterred, so perhaps he had remained silent. I could only hope.
Arriving at the restaurant, the waiter took us to our table. Taylor Gallo was already seated at the table, instantly delighting GG.
And next to him was Cooper, dressed in a khaki velvet blazer, matching shirt and tailored jeans. His long black hair was pulled back in a kemp ponytail, perfectly matching his trimmed facial hair for the occasion.
I had never seen Cooper look so dapper, even more handsome than I could imagine. "My love," he said, kissing me sweetly, "Don't you look sensational?"
"Thank you, my love. It's all for you." As I embraced Cooper, I noticed Taylor watching us, studying our relationship. "I see you've met Taylor."
"Yes, we were talking about the stock market. We both had shocking days, it would seem."
"Oh, I'm sorry about that." I looked across at Taylor, who, for the first time in our friendship, had an expression I couldn't read. Did he hate Cooper? Did he love Cooper?
And for the rest of the night, my friends sent me all sorts of mixed signals about Cooper. James didn't bring up the other day, which surprised me when I began to fawn over Cooper's looks. "Gees, he scrubs up damn well."
I told James to put it back in his pants, which he bellowed with laughter. He gave that sort of laugh when you knew what you were saying was truly funny to him.
But at one point, he seemed to disapprove of Cooper's choice of wine. "Who orders white in the middle of winter?"
I could feel myself wanting to correct my friend, but I couldn't get the words out. He was ordering white wine for me because I asked him to.
Yet, as I went to say it, GG interjected and asked Cooper all about his work.
And as he explained what he did to the entire table, I watched the screwed-up expressions from GG and confused looks from Sophia, who I'm pretty sure doesn't even know who Hulk Hogan is.
Then, Taylor seemed to articulate what all the mysterious expressions meant.
"So you're an actor?"
As Cooper and I returned to his car, I held his hand tight after he paid the bill when no one was looking.
“Thank you," I said, "For putting up with whatever the fuck that was."
