Main Event Man And Business Advice; Take The Hints Where You Can Get Them
Day 203 of The Andie Chronicles
"Do the crowd know that you're performing today?"
"They have no idea. The surprise entrance is going to be epic."
My boyfriend jumped up and down on the spot, unable to contain the energy surging through him.
"The guys at GCWW have allowed me to use my music for this, so the crowd will know it's me immediately."
"Do they not know it's going to be you? I'm a bit confused."
As much as I had been watching hours of wrestling tapes and studying Cooper's old matches, there was still so much about the wrestling world I didn't understand.
I was genuinely interested in how it all worked. Looking at Chris, the owner of the Gold Coast wrestling, and Cooper, with his fame and fortune and best-selling merchandise business, I had much to learn from the wrestling world.
I know it's not the fashion industry. The wrestling industry could have been better, and things could still be improved.
But I was green, a complete newbie, and looking to branch out independently. I needed to learn everything possible from anyone willing to teach me.
"Well, every wrestler has entrance music. You know my music, right?"
"Yep." I knew it well. I listened to it during every workout. "What about it?"
"Well, most of the songs for each wrestler are owned by the company that plays them. I don't own the song. So if I'm going to a different company and they play a different song, the crowd don't know it's me. But tonight, everyone knows my GCWW music; when it hits the speaker, they will know it's me."
"Oh, I get it now. It's kinda like your branding, your signature."
"Yeah, I kind of like that." He stopped jumping for a moment. "I guess I never really thought of it that way, but it is my branding. And it sucks when you can't use that branding when you've moved to another promotion."
This was one of many hurdles Cooper had to jump upon returning to Melbourne. For me. To be with me.
I couldn't believe how much Cooper risked in his career. And here I was, making his life harder and making his job harder at the same time.
Suddenly, I was incredibly grateful for everything that Cooper had done. I loved him even more, if possible, at that moment.
I took my place amongst the wrestling fans, loud and raucous, as each match began and concluded with spectacular finishes. I marvelled at how the locals knew the faces and the names of the wrestlers.
And they certainly knew the music well, often singing along as they came to the ring.
This converted music venue was different from the one in Queensland. It was far more established, more of an amphitheatre-style design with permanent seating around each wall. Perfect for a wrestling event, I concluded.
I examined the entire set-up and thought this was more of the big time I imagined for Cooper.
But once I watched him on television, I realised this was still a small-time gig. And he was doing this because he loved wrestling more than anything else.
The main event started, and as the wrestlers began hammering each other, crashing into one another, I believed their hate for each other.
I believed the story. And their disdain for the big guys in the wrestling world, simply from how they mimicked them. One of the plucky upstarts even used Cooper's finishing move, a no-no in the wrestling world.
What an insult to the former champ.
Yet, when Cooper came running out, his music played, sending the crowd into a surprised frenzy, everything made sense.
As much as the crowd was loud and out of control, it was so much more relaxing than being at home. Or in the offices of Douglas Gallo.
I loved it here.
It was home.
