Single Women Playing Threats To Taken Men; A Normal Day In The Office
Day 128 of The Andie Chronicles
“I would ask you for lunch but I might get in trouble.”
Taylor rocked back and forth between inside my office and the hallway. Jerking his head between me and the passersby, his noncommittal stance was unlike the man I knew.
It was official though; I was the enemy. This morning a group of three marketing assistants saw me walking down the hallway and trotted the other way.
I wondered how long I could walk around the office scaring people out of the way. I could change the course of history by walking into a room, it would seem.
Powerful stuff, right? At least that’s what I told myself. After all, I was getting a shit load of lemons lately.
“Which one of my fellow colleagues is going to deliver the bollocking if you invite me to lunch?”
Taylor grinned, chuckling at the thought before scanning the surroundings behind him, again.
“We should take a poll. I bet GG will be most annoyed followed closely by my brother.”
I tried to force a laugh but it was a sad state of affairs. We all worked together, and we pretended to get along, but it was so much more complicated than anyone admitted to.
Damn friendships. They’re never like they are in the fairytales.
“Why would GG feel annoyed? We’re meant to be really good friends. I’ve known her so much longer than you. What’s the threat?”
Taylor slipped inside my office and closed the door. He began to lean over my desk and whisper.
“It’s not you, personally. She would hate how uncomfortable it is. Exes at the same table. It’s not something she can control. She wants everyone to be happy like the old days, and that’s never going to happen now.”
The old days are otherwise known as when Douglas and I were a couple when we were people who cared about each other. And people who screwed each other’s brains out.
GG and I had this thing in common; we were both with a Gallo brother. We were like sisters until we weren’t.
And it pained me knowing I couldn’t make my friend happy. But this was little comfort to my own ailing heart. My friend didn’t want me around in favour of keeping someone else happy. She cared more about Douglas than me.
“It’s hard not to take it personally,” I deduced. “But I did assume it was because you and I are so close and she felt threatened. You know, her cheating ex-husband. It wouldn’t shock me, is all I’m saying.”
Taylor leaned in closer to me. “She doesn’t know about us.”
I leaned in closer to him. “What does us mean?”
Taylor stared at me, unable to look away. “Andie, I care way too much about you to have this conversation.”
And as quickly as the words left his mouth, he straightened himself and walked out of my office. Moments later I heard his voice mixed with GG’s and Douglas’.
I didn’t have feelings for Douglas anymore, yet, I couldn’t deny missing the old days.
