“Are you coming with me?”
We arrived at the show, as Cooper was set to defend his title again. It was the champ’s prerogative to defend it as much as the promotion needed. He was the one on the posters, after all. Give the people what they want.
Selfishly I wanted to keep Cooper all to myself, but I couldn’t deny how masterful he was in the ring. I had to see him perform again. It was addictive.
“Where are you going?” I pondered, as he was about to turn away from the main entrance to the GCWW building.
“Backstage. You can watch from there if you want. Then we can hang out until my match starts.”
He was holding my hand, and I squeezed it tight as I followed him past the ring, the chairs and through the curtains. I saw some of the faces from the gym and some from the matches. As we trotted past a makeshift catering table, I noticed Chris talking to a pair of wrestlers, who waved to me and kept talking.
“I’ll be over to say hello in a moment, Andie.”
“Take your time,” I replied, calling over my shoulder as I followed Cooper to his private dressing room.
It was a small room, a converted closet I concluded, but it was away from everyone else. There I could watch Cooper stretch, undress, and redress after I had my way with him. Being the champion had more ups than downs.
A knock on the door interrupted my second attempt to ride Cooper on the flimsy sink of his private bathroom.
“Yeah, come in,” Cooper called. “Boss, what’s happening?”
Chris looked occupied in thought, serious. I loved the energy; I wanted to bottle his determined look and claim it as my own. “With the match tonight, what are your thoughts on Andie coming to the ring with you? Valet for the night.”
A valet, I later learned, was a sidekick to the wrestler.
A manager at ringside. Someone who could interfere when needed, be the mouthpiece for inept wrestlers on the microphone.
Or be the arm candy to the guys whose character needed the sex appeal.
“Are you talking about me? In the show?” Cooper laughed. “She’ll do it, boss. I’ll get into one of my shirts, and we can get her to do a sneaky slap when Derek tries to give me a cheap shot.”
“A slap? Like for real?”
It was like I was almost getting every second word they said. I couldn’t fathom they were even contemplating me being in the show.
“You can’t really fake a slap. Just don’t wear any rings on the hand you want to do it with,” noted Cooper. “That’s when you can really hurt a guy.”
“Settled. See you out there.” And as quickly as he entered the room, Chris was gone.
I stared at Cooper in disbelief. “Are you serious? I can’t go out there and do that. I’ll stuff it up. I will get it wrong. I will miss the cue and everyone will be so pissed off at me and you will hate me for it. I always stuff up.”
“Babe,” said Cooper, pulling me onto his lap to stop me from pacing around his locker room. “I wouldn’t have said yes for you if I didn’t think you could do this. You’re going to kill it.”
How did he have this much faith in me?
Before I could ask that question, Cooper was stripping me, replacing the hoodie I was wearing with one of his t-shirts. He stood back and looked me up and down. That’s when he took the hem of the shirt and ripped it, tying it in a knot to show my waist.
“You look so fucking hot in my shirt.”
And before I knew it, I was by the ringside, waiting for the moment I needed to slap his opponent so he could get the win. And I did it.
Boy, winning sure felt good.
