The Boss's Must-Do List Comes From The Private School List. And We Know It Well.
Day 214 of The Andie Chronicles
“We’re going to have a presence at the New South Wales tradeshow,” declared Douglas.
A collection of the staff was standing in the kitchen, innocently sipping coffee, when he barged in, insisting we listen to him during this impromptu meeting.
It was unprofessional, I noted internally. Why don’t we move to a meeting room if you want to speak to us?
“What’s this trade show?” Sophia pondered out loud.
“It’s this one for new entrepreneurs. The NNES.” The silence was deafening. “The National New Entrepreneur’s Symposium. And we must show our faces, make a stir.”
This is the first I have heard of the event. Looking at James, Sofia and GG, they had never heard of it either. It didn’t have the word retail or eCommerce in the title. And with the looming launch date fast approaching, did we have time for something like this?
James interjected before Douglas could continue his confusing declaration. “Is this the sort of thing that is appropriate for us?”
Douglas pouted, fixating on James, clicking his tongue. “What do you mean by that, James?”
His question needed no clarification, but James had to spell it out for our shortsighted boss. “Well, if we’re going to do any sort of tradeshow or symposium or anything, it probably should be for retail, right?”
I remember James and I talking about tradeshows in the early days of coming up with Highway. We liked the idea. They always sounded like fun, but we knew, ultimately, they were a waste of time.
Trade shows were about marketing to people who weren’t our buyers. And they were more about showing ourselves off to the industry. It was all about boasting, comparing who had the most, and keeping up appearances. And this professional strategy had Douglas’ name written all over it.
It was times like this when I wondered why my ex never wanted to measure his appendage when I was curled up in his sheets. Perhaps if we had lasted a little longer, I would have indulged his need to have the most enormous cock in the room.
Funny, he was now being the most enormous cock in the room.
“Trade shows are trade shows, James. It doesn’t matter what they’re specifically for. It’s just about the fact that you’re there, like at the races. It’s about showing your face. It’s about putting your name out there. It’s something that we have to do.”
The private school mantra, I deduced.
For the next five minutes, our coffees grew cold. Douglas outlined a list of arduous tasks the team would need to execute before the tradeshow.
And as he concluded, he oh-so-casually mentioned how someone from our team would have to go with him for the week. To accompany him, “the face of Highway.”
I eyeballed Douglas in disbelief. He was not the face of this at all. He was the money man.
He never quite knew his place, I thought. But it didn’t matter. I wasn’t going to be the one going with him, I mused.
That much I knew.
